Memory Places
For one day only - Memory Places, a site-responsive installation in the Cathedral Precincts by 26 artists from the BA Fine Art, Year 2 at University for the Creative Arts at Canterbury.
The works will be viewable from 1-4pm on Friday 3 May, threading through Precinct spaces, from the Cloisters to the Dark Entry.
Memory Places
You are invited to explore the Cathedral Precincts, from the sunlit colonnades of the Cloisters, the echoes of the Chapter House, the tranquil arches of the Water Tower, towards the shadows of the Dark Entry, to locate site responsive works by 26 artists currently studying Fine Art at the University for the Creative Arts at Canterbury. The relationship between our experience of space and the processes of memory have been described since ancient times, with the classical Greek method of loci, or memory journey. Using the interplay between form and space, light and shadow and the architectural framings of these interconnected spaces, the artworks and their considered placement in this historic site evoke the elusive nature of memory, where the past intertwines with the present, shaping our understanding of the world.
Exhibiting artists: Lauren Bailey, Susie Bear, George Buchanan, Sebastian Castanada, Sophie Chan, Vanessa Claridge, Alice Farndon, Anna George, Ella Goddard, Joshua Gourlay, Lara Green, Kay Horne, Nadya Hristakieva, Pat Irimie, Mehmet Salih Keskindag, Kate Killick, Jessica Lartique, Abigail Papell, Summer Pilkington, Lily Rudd, Saint Scott-Handy, Vania Searle, Eliza Socratous, Grace Swansbury, Becky Wiggins, Maya Wong
Hortus Herbarium
The exhibition Hortus Herbarium: an archive of nature and rewilding the garden will also be open to view at Canterbury Cathedral Lodge, with works from artists from the BA Fine Art at UCA Canterbury responding to the history of gardening at Canterbury Cathedral and reconsidering our relationship with the natural world.
