A Girls’ Choir for Canterbury Cathedral

A Girls’ Choir for Canterbury Cathedral

The Cathedral is moving ahead with plans to create a volunteer girls’ choir later this year. The girls who will be drawn from local secondary schools and be between the ages of 12 – 16 (School Year 8 – Year 11), will sing initially at services when the boy choristers, who are boarders, are on their twice termly breaks. The first auditions will be held on 23 November 2013 at the Cathedral and it is hoped that the choir will be operational by the end of 2013. A programme of further opportunites to sing in Cathedral services and elsewhere will be developed.

Canterbury Cathedral has a very long tradition of choral music and the world famous choir of men and boys’ voices has seen some of today’s notable musicians such as Harry Christophers,Trevor Pinnock, and Mark Elder pass through it as choristers. The girls will add to the Cathedral’s historic choral tradition but as a distinct and separate entity.

We hope to find about 20 girls from secondary schools in Canterbury to sing at some of our services. A girls’ choir will provide a further dimension to the Cathedral’s worship and be an exciting addition to the Cathedral’s long history of musical achievement.

The Dean of Canterbury, the Very Revd Dr Robert Willis

The director of the Girls’ Choir, to be called the Canterbury Cathedral Girls’ Voluntary Choir, will be the Cathedral’s Assistant Organist, David Newsholme.

I am greatly looking forward to directing this new choir It is always good to create new ways of making music and this will be an exciting new chapter in the Cathedral’s story.
