We can’t wait to welcome you to Canterbury Cathedral.

Tickets can be booked online or are available to buy on the day at our Visitor Centre.

By accessing the grounds or buying a Canterbury Cathedral admission ticket, you agree to be bound by our Terms and Conditions of Entry.

 

It is always free to attend a service of worship or come into the Cathedral to pray.

Opening Times

Monday to Saturday 09.00 - 17.00 (last admission at 16.00)

Sunday 11.30* - 17.00 (last admission at 16.00)
*Between 11.30-12.30, access is available to the Cathedral grounds and Shop only. The Cathedral church opens at 12.30.

Opening times are subject to change. Occasionally, areas of the Cathedral may be closed to visiting, due to services, special events or for conservation work to be carried out.

To avoid disappointment, please check opening times and upcoming closures before visiting.

You may be eligible for a Cathedral Pass if you:

  • work in the old city of Canterbury
  • live within 4 miles of Bell Harry tower, including within The Precincts
  • are a member of the Cathedral Congregation
  • are immediate family of a Cathedral staff member
  • are a member of any church in the diocese (on the parish electoral roll or equivalent)

Our Cathedral Pass cannot be used in conjunction with other promotions or offers.

The Friends are the Cathedral’s fan club!

Parking 

Parking in the Cathedral grounds is only available for Blue Badge holders, subject to limited availability and prior arrangement. There are several public car parks nearby.

Planned closure: 13th - 15th January 2025

The Cathedral, Cathedral Lodge and Shop will be closed from Monday 13th - Wednesday 15th January 2025 for our Cathedral Staff Training Conference.

Morning and Evening Worship will take place as usual, and St Augustine’s Chapel will be available during the day for private prayer. Check service times

An installation of hundreds of beautiful, delicate hand-crafted boats embarked on their own journey through the vast architecture of Canterbury Cathedral, each fragile boat symbolizing the transient passage of the life of an individual.

*Included free with a valid Cathedral Admission Ticket, Cathedral Pass or Friends Card. Children aged 17 and under go free (T&Cs apply). No need to book.

All are welcome to join us for our traditional services and carols, brand new services and events, child-friendly activities, beautiful trees and decorations.

Many of our Advent and Christmas services are live streamed on YouTube and available to watch afterwards, if you aren't able to attend in person.

How long will my Cathedral Pass be valid for?

In order to ensure that we have up-to-date contact details for our Pass holders, we have introduced a five-year term for the new Cathedral Pass, with the opportunity to renew your Pass before it expires. 

 

Can I still access Cathedral services of worship for free if I don’t have a Cathedral Pass?

Yes. There is no charge to attend our services of worship, and everyone is welcome.

The Lounge is Open!

The Lounge at Canterbury Cathedral Lodge - our on-site café - is open for food and drinks, between 10:00-16:00.

So, pop in for a cold drink, a tea or coffee, or stay awhile to enjoy lunch, light snacks and a selection of sweet treats!

 

Please note, only assistance dogs are permitted in the Lounge.

Other well-behaved dogs are allowed in the Refectory garden, when open to diners in the spring and summer months (weather permitting), during the café opening hours.

You can also support Canterbury Cathedral via our Friends of Canterbury Cathedral membership. Becoming a Friend is not only about preserving an iconic building; it’s about being part of a community. Friends’ membership benefits include free entry to the Cathedral, an exclusive Programme of Events, regular publications and e-newsletters, and a 10% discount in the Cathedral Shop and the Lodge.

How To Apply

  1. Please read our Cathedral Pass FAQs carefully and make sure that you are eligible for a Pass before you apply. We are not able to easily offer refunds for applications made in error.
  2. Click the APPLY NOW link above and complete the application form, making sure that all required fields - marked with an * - are filled in.
  3. You will be asked to upload a photo of the applicant as part of the application. A jpeg, or standard phone photo should work fine.
  4. Make your payment (£6 per Cathedral Pass.)
  5. Please use the additional information box to include any other relevant info for your application. For example, name of local minister, or family member's job role.
  6. Take a note of your booking reference and quote it in all correspondence referring to your application.
  7. After completing the online form, send your proof of eligibility to [email protected]
  8. If there are further questions regarding your eligibility, our Cathedral Pass admin team will contact you.

After You Apply

Once you submit your online application and payment, we will check your eligibility.

If you work in the City of Canterbury. Please send to [email protected] a photograph of a payslip dated within the last 3 months (details of financial information should be covered), confirming that you work at a business within the city walls.

If you are a local resident. Please check your postcode against the most recent open register. Send a photograph of a recent posted piece of official mail which shows your name and address, such as a utility bill, to [email protected]. Details of financial information should be covered.

If you are a family member of a staff member. Please include the full name of the staff member in your online application. Our applications team will then check with them to confirm.

If you attend a church in the Canterbury Diocese. Please include the name of your church and minister in your online application. Our applications team will then check with them to confirm.
