Product detail and description
The First Miracle Window: Becket's Earliest Pilgrims in Canterbury's Stained Glass by Rachel Koopmans with digital reconstructions and an afterword by Leonie Seliger.
Over the last 800 years, the Thomas Becket miracle windows of Canterbury Cathedral have undergone many changes. Corrosion of the surfaces has turned the glass from transparent to translucent, and much of the painted deoration has eroded away. Vandalism, iconoclasm and wear and tear across the centuries have caused the loss of many pieces of glass.
In 2018, Dr Rachel Koopmans, a medieval historian specializing in Becket's miracles, teamed up with Leonie Seliger, director of the cathedral's stained glass studio, to examine the glass of the first miracle window at close hand. Funding generously provided by the Friends of Canterbury Cathedral enabled the removal of the glass for their investigation. The collaboration between Koopmans and Seliger transformed our understanding of the window and resulted in many remarkable discoveries, extensively described and illustrated in this booklet.
For the first time in centuries, we now know exactly how much of the window is made up of medieval glass. This makes it possible to see more clearly how the glaziers' creations relate to the miracle stories recorded at Canterbury shortly after Becket's murder in 1170. We have not only learned more about the window itself, but also about the skilled glaziers who have worked on the window over the centuries, including the techniques they used and perfected.
